Fics Wot I Wrote For Yuletide

This(/last. Honestly, part of the reason why I dislike January and February so much is that it takes me all of them to register that the year has changed) year for Yuletide I not only received all the fic (five fics! FIVE FICS!), but wrote a lot of it. This is quite big for me. Usually I MEAN to write a lot for Yuletide, but then life intervenes and I end up with one fic written and a slightly sad expression. This year I ended up with NINE fics written and a slightly smug expression. A most marked improvement, I must say.

Anyway, since the reveals deadline has now passed I can reveal all of the fics that I wrote beneath the cut! So...

#ChristmasWolves for Hikaru [@TLFTravelAlerts, Gen]

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the cavernous subterranean transport system, not a creature was stirring, not even the genetically mutated rat who worshipped the dark screaming that came from the North Line.

This was the fic I wrote for my assignment, and I really enjoyed writing it. I've loved the account for ages, so I was super pleased to get it to write! I decided to write a vaguely Christmas themed fic incorporating some of my recips favourite tweets, and I think it turned out pretty well! I especially liked writing the wolves bit, and the various bits of the Underground gaining sentience!

Let's Do It for Entropynchaos [Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch, Thomas Nightingale/Peter Grant, Teen and Up]

“Yes,” Nightingale said. And, with a sudden grin, folded his newspaper and jumped up to his feet, “whyever not. Let’s get married.”

This was a PH I picked up. The recip's main request was for fluff, and I was happy to comply! This fic is basically Nightingale and Peter deciding to get married, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I think I managed to make it really fluffy, but still with some vague semblance of a plot in there. It's also notable for being possibly my post popular Yuletide fic to date, which is definitely something that I'm willing to take!

Diamonds on Her Wrist [Serial Killer - Lana Del Rey (song), OFC/OFC, Teen and Up]

The woman sitting at the bar had blonde hair flowing down her back, and a certain old style charm that put him in mind of one of those old Hollywood starlets. The classic ones, the ones his mother had used to watch on a seemingly endless loop with her hands clasped in front of her and a dreamy look in her eyes.

The recip apparently didn't like this fic that much, but I'm still fairly proud of what I did with it (and hope that other people will like it) so I'm going to list it here anyway. This is a fic for the Lana Del Rey song Serial Killer, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I wanted it to be sultry and sexy with a dark edge, much like the song, and I'm pretty sure I succeeded.

Untune the Sky for Fallingvoices [Coriolanus - Shakespeare, Aufidius/Coriolanus, Teen and Up]

“This,” he says flatly, “is the most ridiculous situation I’ve ever had the misfortune to find myself in. And that includes literally all of the debates you made me sit through before this whole mess started.”

This was possibly the fic I was most worried about before the collection went live, I've never written for Coriolanus before and I love the characters so very much that I was worried about ruining them, but it's received a really good reaction and I'm really pleased with it. Fallingvoices' letter was excellent, and when I saw Coriolanus and post-apocalypse AU close together I really couldn't help myself. I think I managed a really interesting tone here, and I'm really pleased with the dynamic I portrayed between the characters.

A Bad Peace for Cartographies [Roman History RPF, Teen and Up]

Agrippa has been dead for a year, she is growing used to being seen as a beautiful and influential widow – the first of all women in Rome - and yet to her father she thinks she’ll always be seen as a disobedient little girl who could never once sit quietly enough or curtsy low enough or make herself a perfect goddess adored by all. She takes a long sip of her wine, puts on her most insincere smile and answers, “am I not the perfect daughter, father?”

I really loved the idea of exploring Julia and Augustus' fraught family relationship, and that's the main thing that drove on the development of this fic. I really enjoy writing complex family dynamics, where the characters involved hate and love each other all at once, and I really liked doing that here. The push and pull between the characters still really fascinates me, and I'm so glad that I got to capture it.

@TravelLatveria for Sineala [Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Gen]

@Unbeatablesg: Sooooo guess who ended up in Latveria?

This is basically complete crack, but I had such fun writing it and so far it's been super well received. The request was for something in the style of the recap pages at the beginning of the comic, and it was a super fun challenge to write in that style and work in the characters that I wanted to. Doom was a particular joy, and seemed to go down rather well considering that I was a little worried about his tone before the fic reveals!

Getting Caught in the Acid Rain for mtgat [Escape | The Pina Colada Song - Rupert Holmes (Song), Narrator/Lady, Gen]

They had been together for roughly ten years now. They had been arguing for roughly nine years, and three hundred and sixty four days.

I love this song, it's so cheesy and the people in it are SO terrible to each other, and so it was an absolute pleasure to write for it. Yet again I saw the possibility for apocalypse fic (this Yuletide was one for apocalypses, apparently) and really went for it. I think it turned out just as funny as I wanted it to, and captured the central dynamic of the song well.

Murdered Sleep for Fallingvoices [The Martian - Andy Weir, Teen and Up]

Mark Watney isn’t the same as before.

One of my favourite things about the Martian was the optimistic tone, so the obvious thing to do was to write a fic with came back wrong AND space madness elements! But, yes. I really enjoyed writing this, and it was a lot of fun to take a different direction with the narrative. I love writing this kind of creeping horror, and this fic was an absolutely wonderful opportunity to do it.

Spider Date for Ladymercury_10 [Silk (Comic)/Spider-Woman (Comic), Jessica Drew/Cindy Moon, Gen]

“Hm,” the other spider lady – Spider-woman? Jessica? – says, smirks a little at her, “you’re new to this, aren’t you?”

Ladymercy_10 is the person who introduced me to how wonderful Silk is, so after I binged on the comic it only felt natural to write her a treat for it! I have a great fondness for both of these characters, but haven't really tried to write for them before. I think this experiment turned out really well, though! I wanted it to be quite a light, fun thing that was quite easy to read. And on that front, I seem to have succeeded!

So, yes, that's all for Yuletide this year! I hope to be doing a few more exchanges over the next few months, though, so look forward to(/dread) those! :)
