For Day 18 of the December talking meme megan_moonlight asked me What are your favourite fics from the ones you've written so far and why they're your favourite?

Oooh, this is a really good question! I quite like a lot of stuff that I’ve written, mainly because I write largely for myself and my tastes I think, so it’s actually quite interesting to look back and see what my favourites are. I’m not technically the best writer, I know I certainly make a few mistakes, but… I do generally enjoy the stuff that I write, and I hope that carries across to the reading experience. I think I’m getting better with practice, and I really hope that people do actually enjoy them and that I’m not just spamming people with my fic.

I’ve limited this to stuff over a thousand words, though I’ve also written a fair few drabbles/ficlets that I quite like. I’ve also limited myself to one fic per fandom, and generally fandoms that I’m still fairly into. I was surprised, looking back, by how many I actually still had fond feelings for – but these are the top ten, and I hope you enjoy looking through them as much as I enjoyed writing them!

These are listed from newest to oldest, just for ease of browsing.

The This Love series [Blake and Avery Adventures – MJ Carter, William Avery/Jeremiah Blake] - https://archiveofourown.org/series/240789

I’m pretty sure that I’m one of only two or three people into these books, but oh well. This series was still a lot of fun to write, even if it didn’t get that big of a readership. I loved exploring the relationship between the characters, I loved writing the more mature scenes and I loved working out how a happy ending could develop between them. I honestly do ship them a hell of a lot, and I think that I here captured my perfect headcanon for them getting together.

Catch Me if You Can [The Flash (TV), Leonard Snart/Barry Allen] - http://archiveofourown.org/works/3468311/chapters/7612463

This is my most popular fic of this year (spoiler alert for the a03 meme I’m gonna try to do), and also probably my favourite (spoiler alert again!). It came from a Comment_Fic prompt that asked for a role reversal where Len was the hero and Barry was the villain, and I am incredibly pleased with how it turned out. I loved working out the world, I loved writing the interactions between the characters and I actually really like how the plot turned out. This is one of those fics that really ballooned, and I’m incredibly fond of it as a result.

How You Get the Girl [Superman: TAS, Mercy Graves/Lois Lane] - https://archiveofourown.org/works/3445982

I’ve wanted to write a coffee shop AU for ages, and I finally managed it here! …Although it’s not really so much a full on coffee shop AU, as a canon divergence where Mercy happens to open a coffee shop. I really like what I did with this story, and I really like how the world developed. It is, definitely, a Mercy/Lois story – but it’s also about Mercy finding her place in the world, about her developing as a character and creating a life for herself. It was quite an experiment for me, but I really liked how it turned out and I’m still proud of it even now.

Bless the Child [Batman: TAS, Alwaysagirl!Bruce Wayne/The Joker] - http://archiveofourown.org/works/2500418/chapters/5550962

This is a slightly odd one for me, as I no longer really ship the pairing involved and don’t really intend to ever write pregnancy fic again, but I’m still really proud of it. It’s the first long fic I wrote after a really long break from writing fic in general, and I think it came together really well. It’s not really about the relationship between F!Bruce and the Joker, as it is about F!Bruce learning to deal with life and coming more to terms with herself. I like what I did with the plot, I like what I did with the characters and I just like it in general. It’s an odd one, but one that holds a special place in my heart.

Fuels the Heart [Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Thomas Nightingale/Peter Grant] - https://archiveofourown.org/works/1168451

This is the first Rivers of London fic I wrote, not to mention still the most popular one, and I still really like it. It’s an AU from very early on in the first book, and really gave me a good opportunity to examine the relationship between Nightingale and Peter. I really enjoyed writing the banter between them, I really enjoyed the hints of sex in it and I just felt like I captured the whole tone really well. It’s possibly the shortest one on this list, but I’m really proud of it nonetheless.

And We Are the Monsters [Richard II – Shakespeare/The Tempest – Shakespeare] - https://archiveofourown.org/works/897932

I wrote this fic for Histories exchange (I think!) and I’m still extremely proud of what I managed to do with it. It’s long (over 20000 words), plotty and contains a lot of really interesting character dynamics that I’ve always wanted to explore in greater detail. I also really like what I managed to do with the writing here, it feels very dreamy and detached and fits in quite well with what I wanted to do with the story. I just think it came together really well, and I’m extremely proud of it because of that.

You Like Your Boys Insane [MCU, Tony Stark/Loki] - https://archiveofourown.org/works/409182

This is probably my favourite fic that I’ve written for the MCU, and contains one of my favourite pairings too. I just really that I really captured my image of how they work here, how they’re really complicated and bitter people who somehow fit together despite all that. I also really like how I wrote it, how it feels dreamy and bittersweet and really conveys what I wanted to do with the story. I think it’s still one of my most popular stories, and I definitely think it deserves that.

And Now We See Each Other Clearly [Matthew Shardlake Series – CJ Sansom, Jack Barak/Matthew Shardlake] - https://archiveofourown.org/works/386281

This is, basically, a getting together casefic for one of my tiny fandoms and I’m still extremely proud of how I managed it. It’s another fairly long one, and I think I worked all the elements in it together really well. It involves investigations, a fair few original characters and the two main canon characters slowly working out that they’re completely in love. I’m really proud of all the elements I worked into it, and I’m also proud of how both the casefic and the getting together plot worked. It was another experimental one, and I’m very pleased at how it turned out.

Intra [Doctor Who/Horrible Histories] - http://archiveofourown.org/works/381010/chapters/622651

This is still my longest fic on the archive, and so probably the longest fic that I’ve ever written, and I’m still incredibly pleased with it. It was basically my go at writing a Doctor Who episode, that crossed over with the Horrible Histories version of Richard III, and it really was such a rush. I really liked the plot, I really liked the way I wrote it and I really liked the world I built. I still think it felt like a quite well realized alien planet, and I’m very proud of how it all turned out.

Want Your Bood [Vampire Babylon – Chris Marie Green, Claudius/Dawn Madison] - https://archiveofourown.org/works/368449

This is the oldest fic on the list, but I still maintain that it’s probably one of the hottest things that I’ve ever written. It’s another fic for a tiny fandom and a tiny pairing within that fandom, but even if I’m the only one that’s actually interested in reading it I’m still really proud of how it turned out. I loved writing the character interactions, I loved writing Dawn’s POV and I really loved writing the sex scene. I just feel like the whole thing was incredibly hot, even if it did probably reveal too much about my kinks. And I’m still really proud of it because of that.

Oh, thank for the links, I just read your Thomas Nightingale/Peter Grant fic and it was quite an engaging AU, quite sexy too. ;)
ETA: Also, what's wrong with practising? How is anyone supposed to improve otherwise?
There's a great quote I found via the fan-flashworks comm that really inspired me:
What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me... is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take a while. It’s normal to take a while. You’ve just gotta fight your way through. - Ira Glass

Thank you! :D

And, yeah, that's pretty much my stance too! My writing has definitely improved since I started doing it more often, and has got a lot more popular as a result. The only thing I really worry about is that I'm spamming some of the tags! But nobody has commented on any spam so far, so hopefully it's all good. ^^

It's really great when you actually like what you're writing :) I like most of my fics because, as you said, I mostly write for myself, too. It helps a lot :)

I saved the link for your Leonard/Barry fic to read later :D

OMG You wrote Richard II! *saves for later* And you never need to worry about spamming people with your fic. Especially not if it makes you happy :D

I did! I've wrote a fair amount in that fandom, actually. All a few years ago now, but I hope you enjoy. :D
