Day 7 of the December Talking meme, and megan_moonlight asked What are your 10 favourite female superheroes?

WELL THIS IS A HARD ONE.

Oh man, I both really love this question and find it a really hard one to answer. Because the thing is, as you may have already guessed, I REALLY love female superheroes. A fair few of them have been treated badly over the years, to the point where they’ve frequently defied medical science, but there are still a hell of a lot of wonderful ones that have been given really good stuff to work with. It was very, very hard to narrow down this list and there are definitely those just outside the list that deserve to be on here but that I just didn’t have the room to fit in.

Obvious note is obvious here, but: this is mainly a list based on things that I’ve read/watched. There are a lot of female superheroes that I would probably be extremely into, but haven’t got around to yet. This is also based on various different pieces of media, and stuff, so often I haven’t got around to all the character has to offer. I probably will, though! Someday!

Right, and with that out of the way… Time for the list!

10. Cassie Sandsmark / Wonder Girl

I’ve mainly read Cassie in the Teen Titans (the preboot run, where Tim Drake and Superboy are also part of the line up) and I unexpectedly loved her in that. She’s very determined, very strong and is allowed to be wonderfully angry a lot of the time. And her friendships with the rest of the team, especially Tim, are absolutely wonderful. I still need to get back to Teen Titans, getting a job rather got in the way of my reading it!, but she’s definitely one of the reasons why I want to continue with it at some point.

9. Jessica Jones

My love for Jessica Jones is largely based upon the TV show. I’ve started reading through Alias, though, so I’m sure I’ll love her for many more reasons soon enough!

But, yes, Jessica Jones! I really, really loved the show and everything it chose to be – and everything it chose to highlight, too, which was hugely important in a number of ways – and one of the main reasons for this was probably how much I loved Jessica. She was just a really likeable character, and somehow managed to accomplish this by being realistically unlikeable. She was angry and battered and not exactly there to make friends, but so understandable that you couldn’t help but be on her side. She was exactly what I’ve been wanting from female heroes for years now, and carried off in such a wonderful way that she really had to be on this list. Yay Jessica Jones!

8. Koriand’r / Starfire

My love for Kori is mainly based on her new solo series and her appearances in Teen Titans, but hopefully I’ll manage to read more of her soon!

Anyway, I really like Kori. She’s bright, and enthusiastic, and absolutely hilarious when interacting with the world. In her solo series, at least, she’s very much an alien who comes from an extremely different place – and seeing her try to fit in, and try to understand others, is really touching. She’s very bright, very strong and I really enjoy how bouncy and enthusiastic she gets about things. She’s definitely a feel-good superhero, and I really like my feel-good superheroes going around and making the world a better place by just existing. And that’s the reason she’s on this list!

7. Cass Cain / Batgirl / Black Bat

I started reading Cass’s Batgirl run quite recently, and I’m REALLY enjoying it. I’m not sure quite what I was expecting, but whatever I was what I got was better than that. Cass is a wonderful character, the daughter of an assassin who is trying to do some good in the world. She finds it difficult to relate to people, she’s never quite sure where the line is but she always gets up and tries no matter what. She also tends to bring the best out of the people around her, and is always a wonderful presence whenever she shows up. Cass isn’t, perhaps, my usual type of favourite character – but she’s absolutely wonderful and definitely deserves to be on this list.

6. Shayera Hol / Hawkgirl

My love of Hawkgirl is mainly based on the DCAU version of her, and… Yeah? I just really love Hawkgirl. She’s just so, for lack of a better word, fierce. And really funny and beautiful and GREAT at hitting things. She’s just such a wonderful presence in the show, and I really love how determined she is and how fully she throws herself into her redemption storyline later on. She’s absolutely brilliant, and definitely one of the best things about a show that is pretty amazing by itself. And for that reason, and many others, she deserves to be on this list.

5. Kara Danvers / Supergirl

I mainly like Kara based on the Supergirl TV show. I mean, I have read comics with her – but those range from the great to the “why is this happening to me”, so… It’s probably best to stick to the TV show for now.

But, yes, Kara! I love how bright she is, how positive and optimistic and surprisingly well adjusted she comes across despite everything that has happened to her. I love how she always gets back up, and tries as hard as she can. And I just love how she treats everybody around her, how she acts like everybody is important and everybody deserves her help no matter the situation. I really do just love everything about how bright and positive and lovely she is, and that’s why she’s on this list.

Yay Kara! ^^

4. Kate Bishop / Hawkeye

…And, uh, now we’re definitely starting to get into the run of superheroes I love because of how bright they are. Yay! :D

Anyway, KATE. I really love Kate. I love how determined she is, how forceful and resourceful and determined to get on with life. I love how she’s both kind of a mess and hugely functional all at once, and how firmly that causes her to interact with the world around her. I love how she interacts with Clint, I love how she works with the rest of the Young Avengers… And, really, I just love her. She’s bright and strong and a terrifying force for good in the universe. And, really, there’s no way she wasn’t going to be on this list.

3. Harley Quinn

…Harley is currently attempting to be a hero in DC continuity at the moment? So, yeah, she definitely goes on this list!

I really ADORE Harley, to the point where she’s probably one of my favourite characters in comics. She’s basically everything good about the world, rolled up into one enthusiastic bundle. She’s had horrible things happen to her, legitimately awful things that would have a lot of people basically collapsing, but she’s still bright and cheerful and fundamentally positive underneath. Her current run has her trying to be a good person, and causing chaos along the way, and I just really love that progression. It shows her to be one of the strongest characters I’ve seen, and with the amount I love that she definitely deserves to be on this list.

2. Doreen Green / Squirrel Girl

So, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is basically the best thing ever. And one of the things that makes it the best thing ever is definitely the main character. Doreen is just so… Wonderful. She’s bright, and she’s bouncy, and she’s just so positive! I love watching her bounce around, and I love seeing her change the world for the better just by existing. She’s another one of those feel good superheroes, the ones I love to read because of how sincerely they believe the world is a wonderful place. And for that reason, and her ability to rock a squirrel tail, she is definitely very high on this list.

I mean, squirrels!

1.Steph Brown / Spoiler / Batgirl

…And number one, of course, is Steph Brown!

The more I read of Steph, the more I absolutely adore her. She’s just such a great character, and such a wonderful one to spend time with. She’s bright, and she’s optimistic, and she’s absolutely determined to make up for her mistakes and do good in the world. She’s an adorable bundle of determination, who makes a hell of a lot better through the force of sheer personality. She’s a lot like Harley, in a way, in that horrible things have happened to her but she’s still bright and ready to change the world. And that is why she’s the top of my list. She’s a force of nature, who is absolutely determined to do good and succeeds absolutely WONDERFULLY.

Plus, she loves waffles. And, I mean, who can argue with that?

I actually haven't read comics about majority of the characters you've chosen, I'm only familiar with their names, but thank you for answering :)

It's great to see Kate and Shayera on the list :) I love those two!
