Currently Reading comics

I vaguely floated doing a post about what comics I’m reading at the moment a few weeks back, and it’s an incredibly boring last day at work where I have nothing to do (it’s a Tuesday. What kind of job sets your last day as a Tuesday?!) so I figured I might as well get around to it now. Gives me something to do other than staring into space and narrowly avoiding glaring at my boss, after all!

Usual disclaimer: my memory is awful, and I’m having to delete most comics off my phone after I’ve read them because I’m rapidly running out of space. If I’ve missed an obvious one I may well still be reading it! I just… Have been touched by a Silence or something?

Ongoing Stuff That I’m reading

Grayson – I LOVE THIS COMIC. It is quite honestly one of my favourite things to read, and has cemented Dick Grayson as one of my favourite characters ever. It’s just so much fun! And really well written! And really interesting! And as for Grayson 12... Well, needless to say I am still clutching my face over that. The world must be doing something right, if that masterpiece is allowed to exist.
Starfire – Again, another one that I’m really enjoying! It’s really fun and really bright, and the art is incredibly pretty. I love how they write Kori in this, she’s basically powered by optimism and sunshine and I’ll eternally have a weakness for those sort of characters.
Black Canary – And, yes, I’m enjoying this one too. The art in it is really pretty, and the story is really fun (if not quite as good at holding my interest as the two above it). Plus, DINAH! I like Dinah being a rockstar, and wearing awesome outfits done in incredibly pretty ways.
Robin: Son of Batman – I mainly picked this up for Damian, because I may well have an extreme Damian problem that means I must buy most things involving him, and… Yes, I’m largely enjoying it? I mean, it started out well and then seemed to slow down a little (Deathstroke appeared in the last issue, and for some reason Deathstroke and I rarely get along) but I’m still willing to carry on with it. The art is nice, the story is fun enough and I’m willing to put up with a hell of a lot for Damian’s grumpy little face.
Batgirl (Barbara Gordon run) – I’m technically four issues behind on this, but the last issue only came out last week (I think? Maybe?) so I should be all caught up by the time of the next release. Anyhow, I’m really enjoying this! The art is STUNNING, and I’m really enjoying the story. I’ve seen a few people grumbling on tumblr (I should really stop visiting tumblr) that it “isn’t true to her character”, but based on the strength of what I’ve read so far I definitely wouldn’t agree. It’s a new direction, but it still feels very Babs in how it’s written. And I like that.
Sinestro – Again, I’m technically a little behind on this (seven issues behind this time?) but am definitely planning to catch up soon. I’ve always had a soft spot for Sinestro, and so I was pretty pleased to see a solo series for him that still kept his inherent dickishness intact. It’s nothing groundbreaking, from what I’ve read so far, but it is rather enjoyable and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes!
Bombshells – I’m… Sort of currently reading this? In that the last issue I read was Bombshells 3, but oh well. I did enjoy what I read so far! But I didn’t love-love it, and it’s not a top of the list priority to catch up with. I might read the fourth issue, and then decide whether or not I want to catch up properly or not!
Martian Manhunter – Again, another one that I’m sort of currently reading. And it isn’t really… Catching fire for me? It’s perfectly serviceable, but it’s just a bit boring and I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to care about. I may read the next issue and then, if it still hasn’t improved, ignore it until somebody tells me otherwise. It’s a pity, because I’m incredibly fond of J’onn, but I’d rather pick up something a little more enjoyable.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl – Oh, man, I really enjoy this! It’s really fun and really bright, and I like pretty much every character involved. As I said above, I have a definite weakness for characters who are basically a ray of sunshine in human form and Doreen definitely fits that bill. Not to mention Nancy. And Cat Thor!
Body Work (rivers of London) – I finally picked this up! And, yes, so far I am really enjoying it. I’ve only really read one issue, but it was very fun and had quite an interesting plot. My only complaint, really, was that more Nightingale was needed. But, then, I always think that. More Nightingale! Absolutely everywhere! Even in things not really related to him!
Atomic Robo – I was a little confused as to where to put this, but comics are still being published (on a fairly regular basis) so in here it goes! This was recommended to me by a RL friend, on the basis of there being a villain called DR DINOSAUR, and I’m really glad that he did so. The plots are fun, the characters are amazing and I’m honestly incredibly invested in what comes next!

The only problem, really, is that I’m generally far more interested by the modern day stuff (JENKINS! DR DINOSAUR!) than the historical stuff. But that’s really a fairly minor thing. And the historical stories are still very interesting, just not so much to my taste.

Things I’m slowly catching up on

Batgirl (Cass Cain run) – I brought the first issue of this on a whim, ComiXology sales are DEADLY to my sanity, and have so far read about four issues of it. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I’m actually really enjoying it so far! Cass is a JOY of a character, and I absolutely love reading about her. I’m definitely looking forward to how this progresses!
Batgirl (Steph Brown run) – Another one brought on a whim! I might try to read a bit more Cass before I properly get stuck into this, but I’m enjoying it so much that I might go ahead with reading it all anyway. Steph is another one of my favourite characters, yet another beam of sunshine in human form, and I love seeing how she interacts with the world. Definitely extremely enjoyable!
Batman Eternal – I’ve been meaning to pick this up for a while, and I’m glad I finally did! I’ve read about half of it so far, and it’s really incredibly enjoyable. A lot of stuff is happening, but it’s very easy reading. And I’m looking forward to finding out what happens at the end of it!

(Even if the first volume was 444 pages, or something, which ouch.)
The Flash (Wally West run) – I’ve been catching up with this sporadically, and REALLY enjoying it. Wally yet again falls into my favourite characters mould, at least most of the time because DAMMIT WALLY, and all of the stories I’ve read have been really interesting and fun. There have been a lot of unexpected moments that have made me swear at my phone (where I mainly read comics, alas, because I have work and there’s no comic shop actually near us), and the character building is absolutely excellent. Definitely one that I’m hoping to read most if not all of!
Justice League International – I started this mainly because of things seen on tumblr (yes, I know, bad Dorey should really stay away from Tumblr), and so far I’m really enjoying it. I’ve only read one volume, but it’s super fun and I really like the way they write most of the characters. Definitely one to continue on with!
Superboy (2009-2011) - Another one I largely started because it was on sale, but I do not regret it. I wasn’t sure what to expect, really, but so far it’s really enjoyable and has made me like Conner more than I already do. There’s not too much of it (damn you nu52!), so I should hopefully be able to catch up fairly quickly!
Young Avengers - I… Cannot remember exactly why I started reading this, possibly because it contained more Kate Bishop, but I’m really glad I did! It’s a really fun story, with a lot of interesting and complex things going on. I’ve disagreed with a few of the plot decisions, BILLY AND TEDDY YOU ARE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER STOP BEING SUPER DUMB, but generally it’s a really fun read and I’ve really enjoyed it.

So, yes, I think that’s everything? I mean, there’s probably more that I’m completely forgetting about – or more that falls into the area of “have technically started reading but not really” – but for the moment that seems about it. If you’ve been reading any of these, please come flail with me! If you have any recommendations that I haven’t been reading, please flail them at me!

Because comics are super fun. Yay, comics! ^^

Yay, Batgirls! I had trouble getting into Cass' series at first, but now I love her, and Stephanie's Batgirl run is one of my favorite comics things ever. I'm reading Babs' ongoing, too, and I've been enjoying it a lot so far.

I've been getting Batman Eternal from the library, so I'm still waiting for volume 3, but I've been liking it a lot more than I expected to.

Have you read Li'l Gotham? It was a digital first with adorable Dustin Nguyen art and Batfamily shenanigans.

I'm honestly reading all three Batgirls at the moment and loving them all. It's a little confusing, Steph's one in particular puzzled my brain a little at first for some reason, but all three of them are really good!

It started off a little slowly, to me, but really picked up steam as it got going. I now just have to finish it before I can start Batman and Robin Eternal! (Which has both Dick and Cass. So, yeah, obviously.)

I have! I didn't wholeheartedly love it, but it was so pretty that I could forgive it an awful lot. :D

Ahh, I super don't want to get dragged into a weekly series that will last six months, but Batman & Robin Eternal is very tempting because I'm excited to see Cass again. I look forward to hearing what you think of it!

I'm a little worried about it, because it is a weekly, but I'm willing to put up with a lot for the combination of Dick and Cass. Hopefully it'll be good! I'll be sure to let you know. :)

BILLY AND TEDDY RUUUUUUUINED ME, goddamnit. I'm still furious that this series was over; I have so many trust issues with Marvel so to lose one of like four things I like was ;_____;

Ahhhhhhhh I love preboot Superboy. If you ever get a chance to read his '90's era stuff you should because he is... an adorable ham. And he's super cute with his girlfriend. Ugh I love him.

I was not expecting to be so invested in them but WHOOPS HERE I AM. And, yeah, I still like Marvel stuff but I wish they were a bit less annoying on a regular basis.

I'll see if anything pops up! Hopefully there'll be another ComiXology sale along those lines at some point, because hot DAMN are they dangerous to my sanity. :D

Wow, that's a lot of comic books XD It's a very long list. I'll save your list, just in case if I needed some starting point if I decide to catch up with DC comics (I'm more into Marvel, usually).

BILLY AND TEDDY ARE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER. Ugh. I love those two.

Yeaaaaaah. I go my comiXology account at the end of July, and it that time I've read over 200 comics. XD Moral of the story: sales are deadly, and I cannot be trusted to be a reliable adult with my money.

THEY REALLY ARE. God, I wasn't expecting to be into their epic romance but I really am.
