Comic books + Mememan!

1. This weekend (Well, semi-weekend. Friday-Monday counts as the weekend, right?) has been spent buried under comic books. I've now read the vast majority of Fraction's run of Hawkeye (FANTASTIC, Kate has smashed her way into my top ten characters list), the first issue of the new Black Canary (also fantastic, I keep shoving the art at P and going "loooooooook"), the first issue of Grayson (also also fantastic, Dick Grayson is a gift to mankind), the first issue of Midnighter (good, but not quite my sort of thing unfortunately) and the first ten issues of version 3 of the Teen Titans (great, and CASSIE IS MY QUEEN). We also rewatched the first two episodes of the Flash (I forgot how good they were!) and finished off the first season of Justice League Unlimited (FANTASTIC).

I can't remember when my life wasn't all superheros all the time, but I'm pretty sure that's a good thing.

2. In yet more superhero news, two people have wrote me alwaysagirl!Eddie (The Riddler) this week! They can be found here and here and are both absolutely fantastic. :D

3. In other other news, have a meme stolen from megan_moonlight! (I am waiting for various processes to complete at work, and am trying to pace myself so I don't end up with nothing to do with hours on end. So far, this is not going as well as it could):

1) Give me a show/fandom and I'll tell you:

- The first character I fell in love with:
- The character who is my ‘baby’:
- The character who I do not understand:
- The character that I think the show ruined:
- The most attractive male and female character:
- The character death that was the worst for me:
- The character that is the most like me:
- The character I think the writer(s) love:
- The character that I just want to be happy:
- My four favorite characters, past or present:
- My four least favorite characters, past or present:

Batman: TAS
- The first character I fell in love with: Bruce himself! the Batman: TAS version does a really good job of convincing you why you should root for him right away.
- The character who is my ‘baby’: HARLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY~
- The character who I do not understand: Killer Croc is a DICK, and I am continually a bit puzzled by him
- The character that I think the show ruined: not ruined persay, as all the animated series characters ARE my default idea of the characters now, but a lot of them looked a lot less interesting after the redesign
- The most attractive male and female character: for male it's probably Bruce, for female Ivy
- The character death that was the worst for me: Not death, persay, but Harvey's transformation into Two-Face messed me up for a good while
- The character that is the most like me: I, er, don't really know! Babs or Selina, or so I like to think?
- The character I think the writer(s) love: they have a great fondness for Babs, but can sometimes be a bit dodgy about writing her
- The character that I just want to be happy: HARLEY
- My four favorite characters, past or present: Harley Quinn, Edward Nygma, Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle
- My four least favorite characters, past or present: Roland Daggett, Lock-Up, Rupert Thorne, Killer Croc

lololol I hated him so much on that show and in most iterations BUT if you ever get a chance to read Batman: Earth One or/and Batman Eternal you totally should because HE IS AN ACTUAL PERSON WITH AN ACTUAL HEART IN BOTH OF THOSE AND IT'S FABULOUS. (also read Batman Eternal because it's my entire life and oh god Jason and Babs and Steeeeeeph, but anyway. :3)

Batman's villains seem either super great or super ugh, which is an odd divide. BUT HAHA THAT IS AMAZING. I DEFINITELY need to pick up the comics with him, if he's gonna say shit like that. :D

AND THEY'RE SO MUCH FUN! I seriously can't believe that I wasn't that into superheroes before I met P. Now it's basically all superheroes all the time and I AM BETTER FOR IT. :D

ALSO: Because I've been meaning to ask, what would you recommend I read of comics!Flash? I've read a bit, and definitely want to read more, but I don't want to stumble into(/pay money for) something horrendous by mistake!

I'll have to check what they have on Comixology (DC seems to hate Golden Age and never reprinted any of it digitally, and there's also still randomly missing Silver Age stories), so I'll get back to you with a proper list sometime soon, but for now: Flash & Green Lantern: The Brave & The Bold (1999-2000). It's a mini series about Hal and Barry, published while they both were dead and that retroactively fits into their lives; if you have to get only one issue, I suggest #3 which involves Hal, Barry, Jay and Alan going on a space camping trip.

The first two storyarcs of nu52 Flash are okay, or as okay as nu52 can be (which isn't really good, but if you want to read something in the current continuity it's your best bet, and has gorgeous art), but after Manapul/Buccelato leave and Venditti takes over the book, it becomes absolute crap.

In general:
vol 1 is Jay on the first half (never been digitally reprinted) and Barry on the second half. Barry's stories are mostly Silver Age silly fun, with lots of Rugues and then with Eobard getting increasingly creepier until things ultimately take a dark turn.

Most of volume 2 (Wally) is good, Waid's run is considered one of the best comic runs ever, and there's a lot of amazing stories. And later on Johns wrote a lot of Rogues stuff, which included some stupid retcons but also more amazing stories (one particular issue, #182, which is about Len avenging Lisa's death, is ranked as one of the best comic issues ever written).

At some point Bart was Flash, but it's baaaaad. Considered the worst Flash run ever until recently when Venditti started writing Flash.

Flash: Rebirth is Barry coming back to life. Good stuff, but it didn't stick around because Flashpoint happened shortly after.

So yeah, I'll come back later with actual issue numbers and stuff. I have a lot of opinions about Flash... also a lot of feelings LOL

Awesomeeeee. :DDDDD I look forward to it!

And, yeah, I've heard BAD things about the nu52 which was one of the main reasons I was a little reluctant to get into comics for so long. They seem to be doing a bit better now, though, which certainly seems like an improvement!

And that's a pity about Bart! I've been reading the Teen Titans comics with him in lately, and I really like it. Godammit writers. :(

This time with the proper HTML.
I have a lot to say about nu52 and everything it stands for, including a lot of whining about personal preferences and some comments about the current state of the superhero comic industry, so I will abstain from saying anything now since it's not really what I'm here for, but I feel like the main issue with The New 52 boils down to: they wanted to build a new continuity that was friendly towards new readers, but what they did was just make a mess.

And now for some heartfelt recs! I'll try to list these in an order that actually makes sense, so bear with me.

Quick guide:
- The Flash v1 (1940-1985) is divided into two halves. The first 104 issues (1940-1949) are referred to as "Flash Comics" and narrate Jay Garrick's stories, while the second half (issues #105-350, 1959-1985) are Barry Allen's first run as the Flash.
- The Flash v2 (1987-2009) is about Wally West's time as the Flash.
- The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive (2006-2007). Bart Allen is the Flash. This shit is so bad it's not worth anybody's money. The ultimate fuck you to the fans is the ending, in which the Rogues kill Bart.
- The Flash v3 (2010-2011) narrates Barry's second run as the Flash after his rebirth.
- The Flash v4 (2011-current) is the nu52 run, and since the universe got rebooted (thanks for nothing once again, Barry!) it's about a younger Barry's adventures, but it doesn't start from his new origins so it's a mess.

The best starting point is v2 #62-65 ("Born to Run"), a great retelling of Wally's story from his origin as Kid Flash to him becoming the Flash after Barry's death.

Here could go "The Death of Iris Allen" and "The Trial of the Flash" if you want to backtrack to v1 for what are the only two real arcs of the whole volume, but I feel like this stuff is better read later on. It's not, like, HEAVY (well, compared to everything else Barry had been in, it really was, though), but I feel like it's not as easy to appreciate and might be better reserved as a later read. If you want I can dig out the issue numbers, though.

You know what? This is where you go back to v2 #19 and read about that one time Wally had a dinner party with the Rogues. Until Johns takes over much later into the volume, there isn't a lot of Rogues around (Waid wasn't a fan, what a pity), so we gotta enjoy what we can.

Then you skip to v2 #73, a feel-good issue about Christmas stuff with Wally and Jay and one of my favorite Flash issues. It leads directly to v2 #74-79, which is the Flash story. Waid's writing and storytelling shine ever more than usual here, and it's one of those stories that you will wish you could read for the first time again after you're done. It's too good to spoil you anything, but if you need any more incentive to pick it up let me tell you it involves [Spoiler (click to open)]a) a demonstration of how Wally is willing to just give his whole self up if only Barry asked him to, and b) a scene that cements that Wally West is, in fact, the biggest asshole in all space and time and some more.

Between here and there you can read pretty much everything else Waid wrote, they're all gems. But it's a lot of stuff and I can definitely handpick storyarcs for you if you want (I'm just trying to to babble too much and hit the character limit on this comment LOL).

TIME FOR SOME ROGUES FUN!
- v2 #182: Len avenges Lisa's murder (pretty sure it contains at least one stupid retcon because Johns, but a great issue nonetheless)
- v2 #183: the introduction of Axel Walker
- v2 #212: Evan McCulloch's origin story
- v2 #218: the new origin story of Mick Rory (significantly different from the old one)
- v2 #164-169 ("Wonderland"): alternate universes! One of those stories where Evan fucks up and Wally ultimately just rolls with it because... because that's a thing Wally usually does when Evan is involved?

Re: This time with the proper HTML.
[cont.'d]

We can't have fun forever, so let's get to v2 #197-200 ("Blitz"). Which is still kind of fun in that Hunter/Wally was my first ship in Flash comics and still one of my absolute favorites, but... yeah, this is where one of Wally's best friends realizes he cares so much about him that he decides to turn into a Reverse-Flash (I guess Eobard did set a precedent on what you do when you really love Flash). Probably my favorite Flash storyarc ever.

Well, there's obliviously a lot more, but I feel like this is where you should start \o\ it's all v2 because that's where the good stories are, but once you read some of this stuff (btw you're, like, contractually obligated to discuss these with me after you read them) I have more stuff to throw at you :D Barry and Rogues stories! Like that one time Barry turned a Rogue back to the good side by getting naked in front of him (I'm 100% serious). Or more Wally and Evan being assholes at each other! Or stuff about the other speedsters (there's a few assorted stories that never got digitally reprinted, and I can totally share my scans)!

LOL this got too long for a single comment anyway...

It was really fun! It's nice how easy it is to get through a lot of them at once.

- The first character I fell in love with: Old!Bruce! Old!Bruce is just the BEST
- The character who is my ‘baby’: Terryyyyyyyy.
- The character who I do not understand: uh, Hm. A lot of his villains? I love Batman Beyond, but the villains are weak compared to the rest of the DCAU.
- The character that I think the show ruined: not ruined, persay, but I wish Dana had been given more to do.
- The most attractive male and female character: Terry and Dana, probably.
- The character death that was the worst for me: Terry's death in that Justice League Unlimited episode was heartbreaking.
- The character that is the most like me: uhhhhhhhh not sure. Max, maybe? Though I am not as cool
- The character I think the writer(s) love: Ten. Which is... Puzzling.
- The character that I just want to be happy: OLD!BRUCE
- My four favorite characters, past or present: Old!Bruce, Max, Inque, Terry
- My four least favorite characters, past or present: Mason, Shriek, Ten, Ten's dad

It really does have the weakest DCAU villains, which is really a shame.

I wish Dana had been given more to do.
Not a fan of Dana, at all, but I think it did have to do a lot with her just seeming to be there to hang on Terry's arm. She could've been better-developed.

Ten. Which is... Puzzling.
Agreed.

Your weekend sounds like it was lots of fun! :D It's really great to read.
I'm so behind all the comic books, I focus mainly on films and shows lately. Though I'm really curious about comic books about Midnighter? I don't know if you're familiar with him.

As for the meme, how about your favourite Star Trek production and also Whitechapel? :)

It really is! :D I love reading, and comic books make it so easy for me. Plus, fun superhero hijinks!

I don't know that much about Midnighter, I'm afraid, besides that he's one of the more prominent gay superheroes! There's a fairly new comic series out with him now, though. It's not quite my sort of thing, but it's been getting great reviews!

And Star Trek:TNG for the meme! :D (I only watched one series of Whitechapel a few years back, I'm afraid. I should catch up at some point!):

- The first character I fell in love with: Picard. Mainly because of Patrick Stewart!
- The character who is my ‘baby’: DATA
- The character who I do not understand: Uhhhhh depending on the episode poor Troi can sometimes be a little baffling in motivation.
- The character that I think the show ruined: WESLEY CRUSHER. I'm still frothing over that damn episode.
- The most attractive male and female character: Picard and Beverly!
- The character death that was the worst for me: The episode where Data's daughter died had me in actual hysterics, as I recall.
- The character that is the most like me: probably Geordi
- The character I think the writer(s) love: Data. And who can blame them?
- The character that I just want to be happy: ALL OF THEM
- My four favorite characters, past or present: Data, Picard, Geordi, Q
- My four least favorite characters, past or present: Wesley, Alexander, Pulaski, Lwaxana Troi

- The first character I fell in love with: BARRY. We rewatched the first episode recently, and it was amazing how quickly he became my favourite
- The character who is my ‘baby’: ALSO BARRY
- The character who I do not understand: Iris' motivations frequently puzzle me.
- The character that I think the show ruined: UH. Maybe also Iris? I don't know, I remember quite liking her in the beginning but she got steadily more annoying as time went on for me. Mainly because of how she acted towards Barry? I mean, you can't just tell a person that you're totally uninterested in them and then try to ruin their every single relationship. That's not on.
- The most attractive male and female character: Mark Mardon and Lisa Snart
- The character death that was the worst for me: EDDIE
- The character that is the most like me: Either Barry or Cisco.
- The character I think the writer(s) love: Iris. FOR SOME REASON.
- The character that I just want to be happy: Barry!
- My four favorite characters, past or present: Barry, Leonard Snart, Lisa Snart, Caitlin
- My four least favorite characters, past or present: Clyde Mardon, Multiplex, General Eiling, IRIS

first ten issues of version 3 of the Teen Titans (great, and CASSIE IS MY QUEEN)

How about Guardians of the Galaxy for the meme?

It's the one pre-new 52, I think? Geoff Johns is the writer. (Aaaaaaand that does not surprise me. Oh new52. :P)

For the meme! (Movie version):

- The first character I fell in love with: Peter was great from his first few moments on screen, so!
- The character who is my ‘baby’: Uhhhhhh. Either Peter or Groot.
- The character who I do not understand: I... Don't think there actually is one. They could've gone into a bit more depth on Ronan's motivations, and actually kept him around after the end of the movie, but I still thoroughly enjoyed him.
- The character that I think the show ruined: NONE OF THEM. Honestly, I liked pretty much everything about it!
- The most attractive male and female character: Hmmmmmmmm Ronan and Gamora.
- The character death that was the worst for me: GROOT. I mean, it wasn't permanent but it still causes me to tear up a little when I watch it.
- The character that is the most like me: IIIIIIIIIIII do not know. Rhomann Dey, probably!
- The character I think the writer(s) love: Rocket.
- The character that I just want to be happy: Basically all of them? I'm glad Dey has his happy little family, though. For being a minor character I really want that guy to have a nice life.
- My four favorite characters, past or present: Groot, Rocket, Peter, Gamora
- My four least favorite characters, past or present: Nebula, Yondu, Korath, that orb guy...? (and I'd like to say that I don't actually dislike any of them! This was a really hard question. Man, I love Guardians of the Galaxy. ^^)

I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO READING MORE GRAYSON. It is so, SO fun and really interesting and I like all the characters and yeaaaaaah. I'm really, really glad I picked it up!

This is the one pre-reboot (well, new 52 reboot)! It's written by Geoff Johns, and is quite good so far. Mainly because of Cassie and Tim, who are both absolute darlings. ^^ BUT, YES, BLACK CANARY IS THE BESSSSSSSST. Ah, man, I've always liked Dinah but THIS IS TAKING IT TO WHOLE NEW LEVELS! :DD

- The first character I fell in love with: Uhhhhh well I already loved Bruce, so...
- The character who is my ‘baby’: WALLY
- The character who I do not understand: as I said on Twitter, I come from around Nottingham (the place where the whole Robin Hood thing began) and I still don't fucking get Ollie. You're going to use a bow and arrow? Against a nuclear monster? OKAY.
- The character that I think the show ruined: errrrrr I'm pretty sure that it hasn't ruined anybody, so far, for me?
- The most attractive male and female character: John Stewart and Diana
- The character death that was the worst for me: not death, persay, but the end of Starcrossed when Shayera left was enough to make me extremely sad.
- The character that is the most like me: UM. Probably Wally?
- The character I think the writer(s) love: Bruce
- The character that I just want to be happy: ALL OF THEM. But especially Shayera I am invested in her happiness 1000%

I like what I've seen of Roy, WHICH NEEDS TO BE MORE AS ALWAYS, but Ollie confuses the hell out of me. Especially when he's written as a hero? Like, seriously, literally everything I've seen of the guy has painted him as a dick. Not an endearing car crash, like a certain other bow and arrow guy I could name, but just a dick.

Shayeraaaaaaa. ;; I love her so much, and everything about her makes me SO SAD. My emotions towards her are basically what Wally's were at the end of Starcrossed, LET ME HUG ALL THE BAD THINGS AWAY.

IIIIIIIIII don't get why they keep trying to make that sort of character super popular? I mean, I generally like jerkish characters - see MOST IF NOT ALL OF MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS - but I generally find it really hard to care about the white rich boy who thinks his money gives him the right to be a dick and lecture people constantly about what they're doing. I mean, to me it's basically like they're trying to copy Bruce's thing with those sort of characters - but with none of the traits that actually make Bruce as likable as he is?

AAAAAAAND APPARENTLY I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THAT, OOPS. << But, yes, I've been meaning to pick up Injustice for a while, actually! The only problem is that I know it'll WRECK me and I feel the need to brace for that. ;;

No, I totally feel you. I always refer to him as a cheap knock-off as Bruce, lol, because you're exactly right. Bruce has a lot of the same qualities but ALSO HE'S ACTUALLY A GOOD PERSON. (Although of course one of my favorite things about Bruce is when he IS a total dick sometimes... Whatever, I don't have to make sense. :p)

IT WILL ABSOLUTELY WRECK YOU but god, Harleyyyyyyyyyy. And Bruce and Selina and Dinah and ALFRED OMG ALFRED.

Aug. 15th, 2015 02:52 pm (UTC)
I think the difference is that being a dick isn't Bruce's only character trait, or even one of his main ones. Under his whole "I AM THE NIGHT" thing he's actually a really nice person who honestly cares about literally every person ever, and I find it really weird when people don't get that. He can be a dick, because literally everybody ever can be a dick, but he doesn't make it the primary goal of his life like certain people. AND I CONTINUE TO HAVE FAR TOO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT THIS WHOOPS. <<

Aaaaaaaaand we just watched the first episode where Dinah and Ollie interacted in JLU and I hate him even more now. DINAH, QUEEN OF LITERALLY EVERYTHING, DESERVES BETTER THAN THAT DICK. >:(

I've seen bits and pieces of it online, and it's all looked really great! I mean, more Harley! And Dinah! And those two together! :DDDDDDDD
